MALINDI
Malindi was an important Swahili settlement as far back as the 14th century. It was also one of the few places where the early Portuguese mariners found a sympathetic welcome, and today you can still see the cross which Vasco Dagama erected as a navigational aid. Malindi is well known for its famed beaches. If it’s a break from the cold and gloom you are looking for, Malindi is perfect for a sun soaked holiday. The Italian influence in the town is easily noticed, with many Italian restaurants, boutiques, cafes and shops. It is never hard to find a 3 wheeled taxis called tuktuk to transport you to your next port of call. Commuting within Malindi town has never been easier with the advent of these yellow, white, green and red vehicles. Malindi has a pedigree going back to the 12th century and was on of the ports visited by the Chinese. There is the partial remains of a Portuguese church, which was visited by St. Francis Xavier on his way to India. The
most popular excursion from Malindi is to the Malindi National Marine
park to the south of town. The variety and colours of the coral and
the fish are simply amazing. ![]()
